I went to Aberdeen in 2007 with my partner at the time, to stay with her family. Funds had been exhausted in the move back to the UK, and it was a struggle for either of us to get our respective projects off the ground. The initial plan was to measure the Aberdeen stay in weeks, but that turned into months. Relationships became strained. I was there for 18 months before I left everything behind, moving back south on news of my father’s stroke late 2008.
The house was located in a small village some miles inland of Aberdeen. Beautiful setting, and a beautiful house. Astonishingly changeable weather, as I recall. There was land, unused. There was a collection of old farm machinery and abandoned cars to the side, on the path leading to the woods, twisted up, burnt out, rusting. I passed the wreckage in this photo one summer morning, and my shadow cast against the metal caught my attention. It seemed to encapsulate the situation perfectly.
