In 2007/8 I was in Scotland. My partner of the time was building a kiln in a field beside the family home. She’d been planning it for years, had studied anagama in Japan and worked hard to find a way to create the kiln on a tiny budget. Her brothers’ help in digging out the foundations and constructing the wooden shelter was invaluable; I don’t know how she would have done it without them. Her friends mucked in. Harris, the shiba inu, supervised onsite. I did not have the skills of her brothers or the dog. I took photographs of the process. She and her brothers, and probably her friend, thought I was lazy. Only years later, when I showed her these pictures, did she realize the importance of making a record. I’m proud of them.
Our relationship didn’t survive 2008. She got Harris.
