A trip to a temple town to thank the goddess for help finding a job.
The last time we were here it was packed. The annual pilgrimage.
This time the hot sun cast its shadows on empty streets, and we had time to look at houses lining the temple approach.
Empty. Collapsed. Windowless. Abandoned bikes outside. Flat tires and broken roofs. Peeling paint and parched plants. Untended.
An occasional car wisping by.
You need an umbrella in this sun.

It’s 通霄鎮 in Miaoli County. The pilgrimage mentioned is the Baishatun Matsu pilgrimage. We did a report on that in the Taipei Times, here
