The Gaoshi Shrine, and more specifically its Torii gate, was to be the end of the trip. It was also the beginning.
Two months prior, we had tried to drive to the shrine but had run out of time. When I planned the bike trip for October, I remembered the image of the landscape through the gate, and imagined it would be the perfect end point to our 700km, week-long ride from the northern tip of Taiwan to the south.
It took us all day to get to the top, up the Shouka Road from Dawu. We finally arrived at just after 5. Any later and we would have missed the light, missed the scene, missed the point of the trip. It took us a week to get there. We arrived within an hour of failure.

Majestic! Congratulations, Mate. It’s a magnificent accomplishment in the art of living… and timing.
